What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a hands-on technique that relieves compressions and tensions found near the head, neck and back by using gentle pressure. The bones of the skull, neck, spine, and pelvis are bathed in the cerebrospinal fluid, a fluid that runs from the brain down the spinal cord, protecting it. All of these tissues are a part of the craniosacral system, a collection of membranes and fluid that surrounds and protects the central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal cord.
The body encounters daily stressors that can cause a buildup of tension from the head down to the sacrum. This tension can distort the craniosacral system, causing blockages in the normal flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. These blockages prevent the healthy performance of the central nervous system and can potentially affect other systems that interact with the central nervous system. CST can remove these blockages and allow the cerebrospinal fluid to flow normally from the brain down the spinal cord, preventing pain and dysfunction in areas from the head down to the base of the spine.
Cranialsacral Massages Remove Blockages to the Flow of Cerebrospinal Fluid
Using five grams of pressure (about the weight of a nickel), the clinician will gently touch the feet, head, or sacrum to listen to the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid. If necessary, they may gently add pressure to an area to normalize the fluid of the cerebrospinal fluid.
A Cranial Sacral Massage Can Also Relieve Tension
In addition to removing blockages to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, CST can relieve tension in the head, neck, and back. Soothing the tensions on the central nervous system can release both emotional and physical stress on the body and act as a preventable health measure to bolster resistance to disease. CST can also relieve pelvic floor pain and dysfunction. The technique can reduce cramping, provide better urinary control, reduce tension and pain on the pelvic floor, and provide emotional release.
