Trigger Point Release Therapy: What Are Trigger Points?
Trigger points (TrPs) are hyperirritable spots usually found in muscle that can appear anywhere throughout the body, mostly commonly on the neck, the shoulders, and the back. These tense and tight “knots” can cause discomfort and pain, often as a sharp spasms or as a dull ache. The most common causes of trigger points are poor posture, muscle and joint overuse, chronic stress condition, and sleep disturbance. In addition, any muscle that is in a chronically shortened position or in spasm is predisposed to trigger point development.
What is a Trigger Point Massage?
Trigger Point Release is a hands-on technique used to help relieve these “knots” by applying gentle pressure to the sensitive and tight areas. Treatment often starts with deep breathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing, followed by cycles of pressure and release on TrPs administered by the therapist. Even after one session, patients often experience reduction of minor aches and pains. Trigger Point Release allows patients to relax, benefiting them not only physically but mentally as well.
Trigger Point Therapy Can Be Used in Conjunction with Other Treatments
Trigger Point Release can be used as a precursor to many other treatments, such as connective tissue manipulation and soft tissue mobilization. Muscles located on the pelvic floor can become tightened and develop trigger points after prolonged shortening. This can result in dyspareunia (pain during vaginal penetration) and bladder/bowel dysfunction, such as urinary frequency, incomplete emptying of the bladder, abdominal pain, and constipation. Trigger Point Release is a powerful technique that can help relieve pelvic floor pain by eliminating trigger points and restoring a more normalized, relaxed resting tone.
